for UK border protection is almost trivial, you have sea on all sides and any surface vessel is easily visible on radar even during storms. your only concern really is low profile\semi submersibles (those are being used in drug smuggling in the americas rn) which you cant spot on surface radar.
you can also install sonars and torpedoes on said drone boats in case uk is invaded by submarine. these can double as sub hunting and tracking vessels against russian subs like around the GUIK gap controlled via a satellite link. on the english channel you can have some of these controlled from shore antennas just checking that no one is sneaking across.
There are zero consequences as of yet, there very well could be consequences for the army and individual soldiers, from damaging their image to political to criminal if a military force is seen to be allowing human beings to fucking drown with no effort to save them.
