The reason they "fight with their hands behind their backs" is because Russia has mobilized only 1/5 of their current personnel for the invasion, and would get crushed zerg rush style if they poke the bear.
Not only that, a significant attack on Russia or Belarus would provoke CSTO as a whole, further galvanizing Russia's resolve.

There have been 4,204 confirmed Russian deaths (with name, rank and everything) in the campaign up until May/early June. I assume it's about 5,000 ca. now.
Since everything about this war is mostly speculation anyway, we have to go by the confirmed reports.

As for hardware losses, it's hard to track tanks/bmp/btr losses, but aircraft shootdowns are easier to track:

Russian army including trained reservists is over 1.2 million ground troops, not counting airforce or navy or strategic nuclear forces or the militias of the puppet republics in donbass which number over 50,000 active troops. No more than 200,000 have seen combat in Ukraine. No more than ~10,000 realistically have died (many of them militias) and no more than ~30,000 have been wounded (many of them republican militia). That means Russian army is not even in Ukraine. This is an expeditionary force fighting in ukraine with direct russian support.
