I just got tired of everything being a fight and of the dishonesty in them. They claim to be Catholics but support abortion, divorce, etc. They are lukewarm and liars. I didn't even bother writing a letter or anything because I figured it a waste of time. I just stopped taking their calls, moved away and changed my name by adding a 'De" to the front of my surname (an old school way of separating family lines) I was tempted a lot a first to make contact but I overcame those desires and pushed through. Now I feel nothing and rarely think of them. My life has improved dramatically since. I'm not wasting endless energy thinking about them, arguing with them, thinking "how might I explain this to them" etc. Now all of my energy is on me and my future, not the past. Always moving forward. It's been almost two years now

longpost time so i'm here with evangelical boomers in the southland and what really strikes me about them is how much their lives are just charades. they talk like gun-toting outdoorsmen/militia-ready and yet the only guns they own are .22lr peashooters decades old locked away in a safe. they make big statements about how the church needs to take action and the evils of the day but then say all they can do is pray and wait for jesus or die when old age/fatness overtakes them. they mourn materialism and yet they are glued to the tv, fast food, all kinds of cheap luxuries. they spend all day reminiscing and denouncing the youth while then explicitly denying the youth both the trust or the benefits that they were granted by their forebearers. already i know they make plans to leave inheritance to charities and sell away things for their current expenses - most of which are self-inflicted health issues or grand amounts of travel. they'll talk about lobster dinners they've had on cruises in europe while then complaining that a cousin isn't submitting to even more rat races (he has a job, they think he should work more)
i would not mind if people would commit to one ideal or the other: if they were cutthroat selfish hedonists, that at least is consistent. but then why preach the transcendent spirituality, eulogize the degradation of honor and tradition, and talk of needing to stop evils? if they are of holy mindedness, why so much materialism and overconsumption, why treat sacraments and rites so flippantly, why take so much effort to shirk duties and take passivity in decline? what it seems to me is so many of these evangelicals think they can "cheat" salvation or fulfillment - that as long as they merely say the right words in safe moments, they will receive abundant rewards in the next life. they themselves know they are helping usher in depravity and evil. what they think is they have no culpability, that they can have hedonistic joy in this life and the next

i'm reminded of the kierkegaard lines, i think it was in "purity of heart is to will one thing" (i am not at bookshelf so i cannot confirm), where he spoke of how true righteousness would act not in expectation of any reward, now or later, for doing good, but for the sake of goodness itself. the promise of heaven or the threat of hell, spurring goodness is itself a corruption of the ideal; it is an appeal to greed or fear, which is not a way to promote a lasting righteousness. it builds foundations on worldly sands. someone that sits around dreaming of paradise and future reward is someone consumed with greed, not goodness. there is a parallel here to nietzsche's eternal recurrence it is altogether more disturbing that i see some of their books quote the same authors but in justification of their passivity. they need someone to twist the message to suit their desire for justification rather than receive rectification
what i hate in the older generations is that they believe they can dwell in mediocrity and be rewarded for at least not being actively evil - even though their mediocrity is what allowed evil. they are not the evil itself: the older generally are not the frothing, godless communists. they are merely those that stood by while the malicious propagated and succeeded. for so much of their biblical lip service, they epitomize the lukewarm church. they desire reward, not good - the good desire to improve the self and the world around them. the people i see are fat and lazy no wonder accusations of le raycism and bigotry make them panic and submit - people like this place such great importance on quietly sliding by, hoping they can ignore the evil and be blessed for never taking a defeat, despite never fighting a battle. they call their adherence to the status quo "realism" and it is often an excuse for compromise and self-service. honesty would admit to such, but they are not honest nor liars. they're really just nothing
