These assets also prevent other nations from taking bites out of their own territory. If nukes didn't exist or Russia lost nuke capability + capability to turbofuck LEO by triggering a Kessler event, then both China and Japan (among others) could be legitimately contemplating direct action to reacquire by force their former territories that currently have a Russian flag planted upon them.
Given the utter shitshow of a conflict over the isle of snakes, do you really suppose the Russian Federation could maintain a hold on at least half of the Kuril archipelago against an actual combined-arms military?
