Referenda have rarely been used in UK politics. The population is larger, so the numbers voting are larger, but the majority was slim. (Only 51.9%)
In comparison the proportion of eligible voters who voted was only slightly larger than that in 1975 to join the Eu (72.2% voted in 2016, 64% in 1975)
But to join it was a 67.2% in favour.
So out of every hundred eligible electors, in 2016 72 voted of whom 37.4 voted to leave.
In 1975 64 voted of whom 43 voted to join.
A far greater mandate. A far larger vote for join than the later vote to leave.
In addition (quite rightly) the 1975 vote was always an advisory vote to Parliament which is sovereign. With a two thirds majority for joining it was clearly the will of the people, and Parliament concurred.
Thé 2016 vote was such a slim majority, and clearly influenced not only by a very misleading campaign (Remain made a few exaggerated objections, while Leave lied on an industrial scale) and a large protest vote element that was simply anti Cameron (the then PM who was pro remain)
Parliament should have ignored the vote, and taken sovereignty seriously
At the very least it should have insisted that the UK remain in the single market, as promised by the leave campaign, and not go down the hard Brexit route that the Leave campaign said thry would never take, but then did.
The Brexit people got had little to do with what they voted for. It was not a triumph for democracy - it was a bought and paid for coup by the hedge fund owners who made billions.

It was just one lie after another, like his entire career. It became untenable.
