A majority of Northerners voted for pro-slavery candidates. Anti-slavery Republicans won the election by dividing the Democratic vote between Copperheads and Southern Dems. In fact the Civil War wasn't about slavery until very close to the end when Republicans made a massive power grab. Even then they still didn't have the balls to free slaves in the north until after the war.

The core matter is the South’s decision to secede. Why did they do it?

You mean changing toward the south's image? By the mid 19th century there were several crops viewed by the publics of North America and Europe as the staples of civilization. They included cotton, coffee, sugar, and tobacco among others. All of these required robust labor forces to cultivate at scale. After the 1848 revolutions, Europe took a turn toward free trade in order to procure access to these commodities. The early 19th century saw good faith attempts and FAILURES to emancipate slaves in European colonies resulting in decreased supply of the most valued commodities. The result was "Coolie" labor which was principally different from slavery as no one was legally owned. Nonetheless it revolved around labor which was coerced and organized along racial lines.

The public in NA and EU came to see southern plantation slavery not as a moral aberration, but as a model to be reformed and replicated. It was worldwide.

States rights was just another reason the war started but it wasn't THE reason.

The reason the North didn't want the South to secede was because of tariffs. The U.S. government collected 70% of its revenue from the Southern ports. It then spent in way of Federal largess; 70% of the federal revenue from these tariffs in the NORTH.

The South saw very little benifit, even though they paid for 70% of the entire Federal Revenue.

Upon the formation of the Confederacy, the South, given it's cotton trade with Great Britain, decided to lower the tariff on British imports to almost nothing, creating for all practical purposes a free trade economy. The Union (North) realized there was no way they could enforce the tariff they needed on British imports along the Union-Confederacy border. Goods could be brought in at Southern ports, and eventually sold cheaper in the North, hurting Northern manufacturers.

Great Britain didn't intervene on the Confederate side because for the two years before the war broke out there had been record cotton crops, and the British warehouses were overflowing with cotton and they had just put down a rebellion in India's cotton crowing region after having created a staple of cotton used in their textile mills. Had those two things not happened, the British would have come in on the side of the South and history would be vastly different.

Imagine for a second if the Netherlands paid 70% of the entire EU governmental expenditures.
Now imagine that the Netherlands was vastly under-represented and benefited the least of ALL the United Countries within the EU.

But what is this ? The EU uses the European Army and weapons that YOU paid for and attacks YOUR ports.
