from the end of the Qing dynasty, during the Republic of China ruling all of china and during the chinese civil war, taiwan was held by the japanese and not by whoever ruled china.
whoever was the winner of the civil war would have tried to retake taiwan in the War Against Japanese Aggression (WW2 in china) to complete China once more.
the USA nuking japan and gaining Taiwan island threw a spanner in this plan because now the USA ruled taiwan and so gave it to the side they were backing in the Chinese civil war, the RoC.
when Mao's gommie forces won against the RoC, the RoC fled to all they had left, which was taiwan island because the USA helped them protect it.
the Peoples Republic of China became the rightful rulers of China via warfare with the excpetion of the island of taiwan which was still under the control of an albeit different controlling force than China (Rightful).
China didn't really try to take taiwan because in the late 1940s it couldn't and it would have dragged the USA into a war and they were struggling to control the mainland as it was.
it was ignorable. but now they could take it if they wanted to kill a few 100.000 people and destroy the island.
it is the last piece of imperial china which is needed for the PRC to control all of the imperial chinese land.

Now of course you can send some missiles and destroy some shit in China, but China has too many buildings to destroy, you don't have enough missiles and China can repair everything with lightning speed, just like China built hospital in Wuhan in 2 weeks. If CHina mobilises everyone and put their economy on millitary rails, China could start manufacturing 10000 missiles a day and send them at American bases in the region from the factories directly, lol.
