I broke a story on here a few months ago about the mass cheating in both core surgical and core medical exams. That the surgical examiner (private contractor) was using the same exam for over a decade so that a cottage industry emerged in Africa and India to sell answer keys to foreign doctors who are also able to sit the UK exam in their own countries. This was only discovered in the spring so that all the exams were rewritten for this year. For over a decade unqualified foreign doctors have been practicing, and if you look at a dif in dif analysis of native to foreign doctors' malpractice claims there is a significant increase in malpractice amongst foreign doctors when this cheating began.
To compound things, the NHS staff shortage means that trusts are hiring locum doctors, these are doctors that work on temporary contracts to fill the gaps. Almost 20% of all doctors in the NHS are now locums, which means malpractice is hidden or not properly addressed. I have testament of this from NHS doctors that very bad doctors are allowed to float around the system never being challenged or sacked because they are on temp locum contracts. These doctors can be unqualified, make a bad impression at one hospital and then a month later move to another hospital on the other side of the UK to repeat the malpractice. Trusts need the staff and so look the other way. It's so difficult to remove doctors that they just let the contacts run out.
This is a huge story that I sometimes want to publish or go to the press but I am not going to stick my neck out. If anyone else wants to pursue this investigation please do and make it public.
