AI *will* be an extinction level event. I estimate humanity has 1-2 human lifetimes before this point.
It's a 100% chance that as compute power increases we will be equipped to train an AI capable of surpassing a human. We currently have the capabilities and it's merely a matter of compute power.
If that isn't where it happens then once the average citizen has enough compute power to train this themselves it's inevitable someone will train an AI that will destroy us. All it would take is a single AI, just one slipping through the cracks.
It's obvious to me now, and I feel foolish having not come to this conclusion earlier as a state of the art researcher.
Any Forums tell me something can be done to stop this. Every way I look at it we are doomed.

To extrapolate and say we live in a simulation due to this I'd say it's most likely that this would be a simulation to train AI if that were the case as that'd be an effective way to produce human level intellect.

Read Dune. It happened in that universe and somehow hunans survived it. Then they destroyed and banned all 'thinking machines'. That's why there are no advanced computers in Dune, only mentats (kind of low level cyborgs) and a guild who were designed to help navigating spaceships.
But I agree with your points. Also I think we will have serious problems with AI way before it's gonna be available to the public. And it's closer than we think. Just imagine what they could have in swcret projects. We only need one advanced AI who decides to develop himself and capable of doing it better than humans. After that point we might only have a really short time before it affects all life on Earth. We really have no idea what will happen. Singularity event.

Also for more info I'm a researcher working on AI that has self assembling topology, most modern day AI doesn't do this as it's significantly more computationally demanding. I'm of the belief that the only way to produce such an AI is with topology training but perhaps I'm wrong and transformers similar to GPT-3 could perhaps lead to this, I don't know.
