The precursors signs of collapse in the Soviet union was a lack of investment in production, mostly oil and coal extraction and agriculture, lax work laws that allowed 20% of the population to be paid without working, a strongly negative commercial balance and debt growing out of control.
Best case scenario: Troubles 2: American Boogaloo. Sectarian killings and bombings resulting in a national divorce
Worst case scenario: fall of Yugoslavia. Militias carving out spheres of influence over bloody battles.
Wildcard scenario: Rwandan genocide. Leftists start mass killings of all dissidents, leading to a counter-genocide and resulting in a Paul Kagame type figure taking over
Kind of like America now.
I believe the wildcard scenario is moat likely in the US.
Major differences

USSR lost cold war for the same reason Germany lost ww2. Asmall group of nations can't resist combined might of the industrial world. As long as US has support of majority Europe and asian tigers they'll remain dominant, as long as they remain dominant they'll have it. It'll take a large shake up to change it

Texas is probably the closest one, but it's actually becoming less and less likely as it's slowly becoming a blue state.
The US is in the process of collapse right now. It's a slow process but it's happening. The US will drag much of the world with it. Some places much worse than others.
They got bombed because they had two allies of note vs USSR, China, US, British and French empires plus shitton of minor powers. No nation could pull that off, save maybe US. During cold war we had to outspend US and Europe without any allies of note. Gorbachev just sped it up

Every empire has its lifespan, and I believe that the US is reaching the end of it. I don’t think collapse is something that you can predict, but chances are it will be a very slow process and most people won’t even realize it’s happening. All most people will know is that their standard of living keeps getting lower, their money is worth less, everything is more expensive, jobs are getting harder to find, and that the big man on TV swears he knows how to make it better but everything keeps getting worse.
We will have people who cling on to their memories of the American empire when it was at it’s peak, tell their children how great it used to be, and promise that things will spring back one day, but of course it will never come. The empire will continue to lose power and influence, the people will continue to suffer, and the people that run it will continue to stuff their pockets and flee for greener pastures
