They were very real. They had been waging an underground insurgency in Iraq and did the same through a proxy in Syria (Jabhat Al-Nusra) However when Al-Nusra wanted to be it's own thing ISIS moved into Syria to attempt to capitulate them but saw unprecedented success and got access to a massive recruitment base. In general Iraqi and Syrian sunnis had long been disenfranchised and persecuted and willingly backed their cause initially as a knee jerk response. "Oh they came from nowhere" Loads of international jihadists in prisons were bailed during the Syrian war as Assad saw it as an easy excuse to clean house of them by bombing the fuck out of them.
As for the Al-Hayat media center videos, they were indeed suspiciously high budget and the explanation is often funding through gulf state front companies which is probable. I honestly don't know how they were able to get access to production that was beyond what most western media was doing at the time.

They were already on their way out at that point, Russian re-training and air assistance allowed Assad to make a major comeback. Alongside the coalition + SDF's capture of Raqqa dealing them a major morale blow, they pumped less propaganda out after that.
As for why you stopped hearing about them, the anti Trump hysteria just consumed the media for the period in which they were pushed back and ultimately defeated. Baghdadi's death was scarcely covered despite it being a story book ending effectively.
