why would you, as a pilot, drop your own work schedule, while not getting paid? or do they get paid even if they aren't flying?

My understanding of what's happening here is the airliners never rehired enough of the coof layoffs so they're all working in maximum overdrive. So dropping 12,000 flights might simply mean they're working a normal schedule again.
