State universities are the best universities in asian countries, and the only way to get into them is to score well on testing. Conversely, it's private unis that are remedial and shit tier, and going to one in a society so based on credentials and lineages means you're pretty much fucked on the job market.

If you fail a standardized test in china, your schooling stops and you are given a job appropriate to your education level. Seriously. Chinese education is built around memorisation and regurgitation. Analysis, extrapolation, higher thinking, etc... isn't part of it. It's why chinese students in western universities are the group most often caught cheating, their education system didn't prepare them for the work they're assigned.

If the family lives in the west and the exam required the kid to problem solve I can easily see all of daddies memorisation lessons being worthless
