it's in the history of this country to be constantly ruled by changing masters and thus there's a general tendency to resignedness, the fascist period was a short lived attempt to finally make Italians as a real people but was cut short with obvious consequences
and even during this period, true believers in it were realistically a heavy minority followed by a mass of yesmen that went along as long as it represented a better alternative to communism, but once americans came in with a third option, it didn't take much to see a miraculous multiplication of partisans and anti-fascists
