Most people I meet have heard of my band, but don't recognize me at all, or no my name unless they're a really big fan. Ninety percent of the time I'm introduced to a pretty female in a public setting, she will completely ignore me. It's just that when you see examples of guys who are conventionally unattractive together with women, they most of the time compensate by providing women either financially or emotionally.

Women are more sensitive/attuned to where the male fits in the socio-sexual hierarchy which will signal to her whether or not he is capable of taking care of her properly. Looks are in a far subordinate position to this. In any case, once you get to know a person looks become less and less important (this goes for both sexes), so unless you're some kind of lame pick-up artist it shouldn't be a main concern.
A problem arises, perhaps, when people confuse a woman's interest in looks for what looks will show as a signal of fitness: the autist who makes no effort to dress nice, who wears dirty sneakers all the time and has a neckbeard is unattractive not because of some objective metric of physical attractiveness, but because all those factors signal to the woman that he is a submissive little bitch who cannot abide by basic social norms and is probably dressing that way (=not trying) not because he is aloof and better than that but because he is a fucking coward who is afraid to compete with normal men because he thinks/knows he will be found out. Also, yes, women probably care more about shoes than any other piece of clothing.
