There's no reason it should be, but it somehow is. It can't be threatened from abroad, so it would actually be in its best long-term interest for it to not be. If it weren't then it would be forced to focus on its own internal affairs. If that happened then it would swiftly deal with its biggest problems, in whatever ways that may be. Once that happened it would rapidly become the most powerful once again, returning to being the pinnacle of humanity.
Thankfully it's looking more and more likely that the US will deal with its internal problems regardless of not really losing its position, even though it will not come or happen as quickly as would be ideal. Hard times are ahead, very hard times, but things will eventually get better, and when they do it will be like nothing ever before seen.
