read up on eastern-middle eastern religions that (unlike the US) are interchangeable with philosophy
take what you want- leave the rest behind- but the 8 fold path from Buddhism i don't think one can go wrong with (in theory I don't yet live by it. I'm essentially a hedonist at this point but one who still feels guilt.
