Millennial OP here. My personal hypothesis is that the crash really started in the late 90s. You had movies like Office Space, The Matrix, Fight Club, etc. Bands like Green Day and Rage Against the Machine, gangster rap, etc. Basically everything was fucking falling apart and youth were getting rowdy. Then the unexpected happened--the internet blew up and suddenly everyone thought they could be famous again. So shit calmed down for a few years... and now we're here.. back to the late 90s, but with just a shit ton more porn. That's my guess.
