Idioms crossing the language barrier always get lost in translation and end up sounding strange, especially when people take them literally having no idea it's an idiom since they aren't apart of their culture.
Besides, it's not like in English we don't have the similar idioms, with near identical meanings. This is just journalists being literal bottom of the barrel morons as should be expected by anyone even briefly paying attention.
