Most places getting on the highway the lane continues for a while so you can pick up speed and merge
Where I am you have about 200ft, some places less, to merge before the lane ends
When it gets even slightly busy it turns into a free for all of people cutting each other off and slamming on brakes
It's like no planning went into it and they just said yeah put those there itll work

This is what all American cities need to do to as many non-arterial roads that are wide enough to do it. That and update zoning to force new construction to support non-car transport infrastructure wherever possible (e.g storage, paved surfaces).
