This winter... if you have a smart meter... you're fucked. The government is planning to "voluntarily" turn off power to smart meter customers at periods of high demand. We say "voluntarily" because in fact it will be compulsory - your power will just be turned off and you will receive compensation for the inconvenience. The only three ways to opt-out of this voluntarily scheme are A) Not allow the smart meter to be installed, B) build a faraday cage around your smart meter to block it from receiving disconnection signals, or C) illegally bypass the meter.

Peak grid demand is an expensive problem to try and fix, made objectively harder and more expensive to fix by solar. A smart meter could help if they offered real time price reporting so you could have your battery system connect to charge when the price was low and then disconnect your home from the grid when the price was high.
The best case for a solar system is to sell the solar panels, and use the money to buy more batteries. Currently overnight demand is about 20% of peak demand. In some locations that funded lots of solar mid day generation because of solar drives the price negative so you might be paid to take energy if the market really was free to buy and sell.
