China has been stocking up on gold for decades. Heavy speculations that they have more gold than Fort Knox since the latter hasn't been audited in 50 years. Plus the possibly to ask their citizens to turn in their gold to the state.
This last bit is interesting because unlike Western countries the CCP doesn't have a history of confiscating their citizens gold by force or otherwise so they garner a higher level of trust from their citizenry in this regard compared to the West.
