i just checked
it wasnt a circle in a square but z in a square and it indicated troops from crimea
apparently the z was for the troops from the russian east, v was marines, o was troops from belarus (prob just russians who came from that direction) and x were the chechens (although i remember chechens with v markings mostly)
i got it all mixed up
i also remembered wrong, the ones around kiev must have been the o guys
