Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) accuses Vladimir Putin of spreading FUD in Germany with the high gas prices. This is "the best breeding ground for a populism that is supposed to hollow out our liberal democracy from the inside," Habeck told the "Spiegel".
“Putin wants our country to disintegrate. But we're not breaking up," Habeck continued.
The Vice Chancellor warned of a harsh winter. "We are already where Germany has never been," he said. If Russian gas supplies remain as low as they are now, we will run into a gas shortage. "In any case, it will be tight in winter," he continued. "If the gas is insufficient, certain industries that require gas would have to be shut down. Companies would have to stop production, lay off their workers, supply chains would collapse, people would go into debt to pay their heating bills, people would become poorer, and frustration would eat up".
"It's an external shock, the burden of which must be borne," is Habeck's assessment. He appealed to the solidarity of the citizens. "People shouldn't have to ask themselves what they're getting, they should do it because they feel like living in this country, because they feel pride and joy in doing something for others."
As a kind of civic duty, he recommends saving energy. He himself sets a good example. "I have significantly reduced my shower time again," he told Der Spiegel and continued: "I've never showered for five minutes in my life. I shower quickly.”
"In the summer I really don't like being in air-conditioned rooms, and in the winter I heat sparingly," explained Habeck. However, he himself is a bad example. “As a minister, I have a salary that others only dream of. Also, I come home late, get up at six and leave by seven. I don't have to heat at all in winter."
