Well for example one alternative is wood gas. Wood gasifiers have existed a long time, and you can run any gasoline engine with it. I'm getting ready to build one, I even got a job doing CNC machine work so i could get familiar with tools people are going to need soon, since people are going to be forced to manufacture their own stuff again.
