I know they come in a set, but that doesn't mean people have to have same background. The whole concept of recessive and dominant of heterozygous genes comes from this. Each chromosome that comes from each parent comes with complementary strand of DNA.

it's not thrown away retard, it's still in the genome. level of complementation is can be measured from 0 to 1 (0 being no complementation and 1 being very strong complementation), it's reduced but still it's there. It's not thrown away.
