Another thing is too, when you're a tiny nation of 3M or 5M, bordering a much larger country of 55M, especially one like England, you're never really going to be "free of them" —Smaller states are always going to be subservient to the interests of the larger state and greater power, especially when their next-door neighbour. I guess that's just stating the obvious though
"independence" will never really happen. You'll basically just lose all the benefits of the union while not gaining much besides a massive foreign neighbour which is now less concerned with accommodating your country. You're still going to have to trade with them etc and they will have always the dominant position and get the better end of the deal, this time you're not viewed as a integral part of the country which has to be wooed and pleased but a foreign state. Still a partner, but again they just don't have to be as accommodating to you anymore.

I've read (but can't find now) that the Republican era Romans were genetically identical to the Celt-Iberians. Theirs's still debate going on if Tarshish inscriptions in south Spain (of Jonah and the wale fame) was proto-Celtic or not
