When I first moved into my last apartment with three roommates my monthly rent was $375 a month. Fast forward two years later it literally doubled, and I live in one of the most liberal shit holes in the country, and I can't afford that. Average wages haven't increased to keep up with the increases in rental costs. The last forty years wage growth has stagnated.
You want my two cents? We abandoned the gold standard and look where it got us. The libertarians are right when they point to the fiat currency system as just another form of international slavery to corporate interests. But at the same time, if the working man isn't getting ahead, then who is benefitting here?

My first job was working for my city park at under $7 an hour in 2002. I went to school from 7am to 2pm, sports practice from 2:30 to 4:30, work from 5 to 10pm. I made straight As and went to a top university, turn graduated with zero debt.
