This, and the following posts I make in this thread, are purely hypothetical and war gaming only.
The biggest problem we would be faced with would be a blockade of the Gulf. 1 in 5 jobs in Texas are involved in international trade, and many of the goods and materials we need are imported. A simple blockade by some elements of the US Navy would utterly cripple us and we really have no defense against it. Perhaps greatly increasing land based trade with Mexico could help with some of this, but not anywhere near enough to:
- replace Texas jobs
- make up for lost trade with Canada, Vietnam, etc.
And this temporary fix is entirely dependent on Mexico actually recognizing us as a country, which would put them in a precarious position wit their neighbor right above them. Same goes for all the other nations.
For any of this to be viable, we need to anticipate and prepare for our economic issues this would cause. I can't really speak to this but I imagine increasing manufactuing and factories could help with the loss in agricultural equipment and material.
