The sad irony is that, had Ukraine accepted a peace deal some weeks ago they would have "only" had to lose territory and accept neutrality. Now they're almost finished militarily and in a much worse position to negotiate. The longer they hold out, the weaker they will be, eventually Russia will be able to just stroll through Ukraine with barely any resistance left. And the position for negotiation will be infinitely worse.
