The plant at Chernobyl was badly designed. Fukushima was bad, but all energy has relative costs. Nuclear is cheap (once the upfront cost is recouped), clean, safe, and reliable. Just ask the French.

So long as things go according to plan yes. Inevitably, probability states that at some point in the future things do not go according to plan. Nuclear reactors can poison entire countries for centuries if things do not go according to plan.
Continuing to irradiate our own planet with incidents like Fukushima (and by detonating nuclear warheads) will have very serious long-term consequences. This isn't some climate change bs. Radiation poisoning is not theoretical and it is increasing globally as nuclear bombs and reactor incidents continue. Look up "low-background steel".
