Even the absolute BASICS of housing, food and fuel are completely unaffordable. Were not even talking about luxuries or people living like kings. We are talking about the bare bones stuff people need to live, and it is not affordable for average workers.
What do the elites expect to happen when 30 - 40 percent of the population is homeless? There are going to be massive riots. Businesses will not be able to operate. When you take EVERYTHING from people they have nothing to lose so they might as well burn down society, it hasn't done them any good anyway.
In the past is seemed like the people in control just wanted to leech off the people's labor. Give them a tiny slice of their production as wage and the owners keep everything else. That sounds like a bad system but it at least allowed people to live their life. Buy a house, have a family and maybe save something. Now even that shitty deal sounds like paradise. Now the deal is basically work or die, then it changed to work AND die.
If you want workers to provide for the owners then the workers need to be able to live. Is the plan to kill off 40% of the population or something? How would that benefit anyone, even the elite?

There is a severe overpopulation problem where the consequences of continuing like this would be vastly more catastrophic than what you mention here, than you could even imagine. Shortage of water, food, energy and even housing. Reducing the world population to just one billion as it was during the creation of Big Ben would be idyllic, while on the other hand, letting the population reproduce freely without any control will bring unimaginable disasters, including the end of the species itself.
