The Irish are basically the hillbillies of the Isles, at one point the actually ruled Scotland and some of Britain but fell to internal family blood feuds and got thrown out of both, they then continued on with clan on clan blood feuds for another 800 years or so, as Rome started to build into Britain, and eventually they just became slave stock for the Danes, Vikings and even Welsh raiders.
Basically the Irish had every piece of the puzzle to rule, but then spent so much time fucking each other over that they became slaves to everyone else that advanced well beyond them because of their infighting.
