This is very much true but most people are too dense to understand the causes of much of it. People are quick to blame the jaded and disenfranchised but seriously lack the concept of how they become that way in the first place. Nowadays though the barrier for entry for many careers is quite high and getting higher. Cost of living and inflation is going up and up while wages are stagnant. So for these people they're stuck feeling completely aimless as though nothing they're going to do matters.
And that makes people desperate and angry. Which intensifies pre-existing dislike of others.
Add onto that the boom in mass media where if you're enough of a terror you can get your face on every station for at least a few weeks, and its a pretty obvious mechanism.

If you want to stop mass shootings, in the form of random spree shootings especially, start from the ground of the economy up.

re read my post. i was and am for the next year completly living off of grants that any one can get if they follow my guide and im taking in 20,000 in excess funds yearly ($8000 a semester usually) to cover living expenses. i dont have to work at all and haven't in 5 years. i dont have to go broke or work some min wage job, i think im making more than I would be if i was working part time actually (15×20×4×12=14,400) so yeah if i was working part time most ide be making was 14,400 a year, that would also lower my financial aid amount and raise my expected family contribution. meaning i make less by working ironically.

The problem with this kind of reasoning is the assumption that 1) the FBI reads all the tips and reports they get, 2) that they take all the ones they read seriously, and 3) that they take immediate action on every one they take seriously. Work in a government or corporate bureaucracy of any kind and it will become apparent to you almost immediately why the FBI gets advance notice of shootings and then doesn't take action on them. They either don't know they've gotten the notice, know they've gotten the notice but think it's just some neighbor being overly concerned, or know they've gotten notice, think it's a threat, but are still processing the paperwork and stuff to take any action on it.

I have a pretty good theory that fits that criteria. The most specific factor that causes mass shootings is America system of mass, intensive public schooling. Of course nearly all of us have experienced It and know that it is extremely low hanging fruit that everyone points to for everything, but there are a number a very specific aspects of our public schools that make them highly effective at creating endemic anomie.

Firstly, public school does not exist to make students smarter or better. It exists to create predictable and manageable human resources for mass society. While this is quite useful for business, it often has a severely alienating effect on students, particularly on those who do not fit the mold. Regardless of anomie, public school does not teach any kind of real purpose. Students learn to become consumers and that their education will help them enjoy a better lifestyle in the future. This is not too bad if students have strong families that give good moral education and purpose outside of school. People seek purpose and the shallow materialism taught in schools is no substitute.

Secondly, the anomie and alienation of schooling would not have be too bad as long as the social contract works. Of course now you can't just go to school, get good grades, and get a good job. Schooling fundamentally does not make sense and when people work their whole life only to work a menial job with no prospect ever having wealth, well, some of them go crazy.

Finally, this has all been happening recursively to each generation since the 40s/50s. As each generation is indoctrinated into the cult of shallow materialism, the next generation has even less meaning and purpose in their life. School has educated us all; we are trapped in a massive kindergarten. I am not surprised that people choose murder. Of course there many other social ills contributing to this as well.
