Seriously what happened? The movement gained so much steamed in 2016 and looked popular enough to become THE conservative party for younger voters. What happened that led to it not even being discussed anymore?

I think when trump got elected. Somehow it just kinda became more about trump and there was this reverberation of victory. So combine that feeling with maybe charlottesville media shilling about a year later. It kinda makes sense. It didnt really die. Just trump victory made alot of people go

The established powers (special financial, media, and political interests that together are often called The Cabal, or the Oligarchy), will not allow the mass movements (such as Fascists and Communists) to achieve power through open, transparent means anymore. The entire political and cultural apparatus is designed that way, and anyone who opposes it is subverted, then treated with injustice, and then destroyed. This is why I call people that try to work within "the system"( the alt-right was an example of this) useful idiots and morons. They are playing the game by a different set of rules. They are the house, and the house always wins. The only alternative is to not play their game by their rules. The inability for anti-status quo groups to succeed is one of the more powerful demoralization tools. By showing that all the means that we've been told repeatedly from birth that work (elections, protests, etc.), only to have them fail, holds more of a sway over the disaffected fringe than glowniggers.
