however it was almost wiped out int he 19th century by the English insistance on it not being used, taught or spoken, and as it was always a language of low status under the english rule, and internationally of no status at all (while english has become the world's predominant langauge) it withered.

there was a large movement to record the folk tales in mediaeval times and most Irish literature of the time was in Irish, not latin. Of course the monks did filter the stories through christian ideology so it is all horribly distorted.
there was then an effort int he 19th century to record irish tales by victorian collectors (and also music of course) again this is writing down the oral tradition, capturing it before it disappeared. so yes, the tradition was one of oral transmission, but fortunately, it was recorded.
there are various annals that were written, in irish, as well. again, just use google but if you are lazy
