they join and get used as a charity puppet if they are just a tool. if someone has a skill they will be able to serve their peers and gain business. if someone has authority they will be examined carefully for any signs of corruption. suitably corrupt authority figures will be selected and moved up according to their usefulness. the vast majority of masons are never promoted past serving the community and their peers because they had no utility to the upper levels. it’s just a feeder system like triple A and double A baseball if you’re into sportsball as a comparison.
