The typical 'lessons' of history are supposed to be that socialism leads to tyranny and famines.
The Bolshevik regimes *set out* to establish tyranny, so you cannot argue that it sprung naturally from socialism. It was part of the policy from the beginning to imprison their opponents to cement their regime. The idea that socialism is a 'Road to Serfdom' is fucking stupid.

As for famines, those resulted from opposition to the dictatorial regime on the part of the peasants, not from the economic system itself. Even the failures of central planning, for example in China, really sprung from no one being willing to question Mao. Thus, the nature of the regime rather than the nature of the economic system.
