i remember being 15 years old and catching it on live TV. i was all excited and laughing my ass off. couldn't wait to see what else would be going on (there were lots of false reports, like car bombs going off etc). it was the single most extreme thing i had ever seen, the world seemed to be ending. i remember my 11 or 12 year old brother bawling his eyes out and running out of the living room crying when people started jumping from the towers. made me feel like a piece of shit for like 30 seconds, then I went back to being excited.

I genuinely will wake up early and sync up air traffic control audio with newscasts and do everything in real time starting at like 730am or so. It's great, I order food and have snacks ready to go and put everything up on my projector in my room and get comfy as fuck. I had a girl over one time and told her I was doing this and she was free to leave and initially laughed and found it silly, but then she leaves the room and comes back in a rush not wanting to miss the first impact. 9/11 is maximum comfort now.
