I have a .22lr Mainly for short range because I don't plan on being in the thick of anything. It's fine for emergency self-defense, however I know very well that a higher caliber weapon would be better. Plus there's that whole rim fire reliability issue. I mainly own CCI, so it's not that big of a deal for me. Worth thinking about, though.

No I'm giving you solid advice. A shotgun is a good all around gun. It can take small game, medium game, and large game depending on the load you use and the ammo is easily found and easily reloaded. It's not a bad choice at all. It's just a long gun and you have to understand those limitations for clearing work.
