The main issue seems to be that civilization itself temporarily softens selection pressure both in the physical gene sense as well as in the meta cultural programming sense as the civilization is more successful. This leads to greater and greater mutational loads until the proficiency of the organization is overwhelmed and the selection pressure snaps back and the organization collapses in the heavy selection period.

I think people confuse good times and hard times with “collapse”. its hard to wipe out a culture/group. Humans are like cockroaches; very resilient. the filter eradicates intelligent life.
I think the great filter is plastic. We constantly fail to investigate the long term consequences of material sciences; aka lead, radiation, etc.
now we have literally poisoned everything on the planet with microscopic polymer molecules. We have no idea what this might do to us and our ecosystem. Its never going away. our entire existence is now submerged in plastic gunk thats too small to see.

I think the great filter is a time during system colonization. If the intelligent life can't live peacefully for centuries inhabiting multiple planets in their system then they sure as shit can't go beyond
