The most important of these blocs are the Eurasian superpower, which comprises most of the former Soviet Union and China; the American superpower, which comprises the United States, Canada, and Mexico; the African superpower, which comprises most of Africa; and the Oceanic superpower, which comprises Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific.
The world economy is also very different in 2022. In the wake of the global financial crisis of 2020, the world has abandoned the use of paper currency and now uses a system of electronic credits. This has had a profound effect on the way the world does business, as there is now very little need for international trade.
The biggest change in the world of 2022, however, is the presence of a new form of government, which has arisen in the wake of the global pandemic of 2021. This new government, known as the World State, is a global dictatorship which controls every aspect of its citizens' lives. The citizens of the World State are divided into a number of castes, each of which has a specific role to play in society. There is no concept of freedom or democracy in the World State; instead, the government controls everything, from the food its citizens eat to the books they are allowed to read.
Life in the World State is not necessarily a bad one; in fact, most citizens are content with their lot. However, there is a small minority who are unhappy with the way things are and who long for the days of freedom and democracy. These people are the rebels of the World State, and they are the ones who Orwell describes in his article.
