Why wasn’t Germany completely erased after WW2?

Of course not as in a genocide of the German people but the German state itself. Germany was a relatively new artificial state created in the 19th century anyways. Germany should have been divided among its neighbors, but why did this not happen?

If you’re wondering why the concept of a “Germany” still existed after the war, I’d imagine the occupying Allies realized that trying to completely punish the common people of the enemy didn’t work so well the last time and wanted to ensure their dignity while also making sure the situation doesn’t repeat itself.
