It’s real easy to make music when all you do for your existence is sit around and “feel” all day. These type of people, for one reason or another, exist not at thinking beings but as feelers. It doesn’t matter to them if the crops grow or if the barn gets raised or if the tax man gets paid. No, they don’t know how to do anything of that. They would die if someone doesn’t do that for them. What they can do though is bitch and complain about simple things and talk about love and life and being happy. Off the back of a thinkers work, they can spend their time banging on fibers and pieces of wood for leisure. Then, everyone else who sits around and does nothing sings their praises from atop of the grain silo. They can make better music because they’re not worried about ensuring that there’s enough food and supplies for everyone. Up until the 1960s, music was something that only the highest class could afford to learn and enjoy. Ironically it took a thinker to make it affordable enough so that the do-nothings could use it. When you spend all day smoking pot and bumming for a dollar, you have time to blurt out vocal tones that would otherwise have zero use in a society.

Guthrie is a guitarists' guitarists. Hendrix was a great blues rock guy with a mountain of feeling and had a great way of playing the chords of a song with cool rhythm (still seen today in guitarists like John Frucante), but he wasn't on the level of technical and theory mastery that's needed to really be considered one of the greatest of all time. Look at jazz guys like Reinhardt, Joe Pass or Charles Byrd for that

I'd agree with guys like Vai, but Guthrie especially is really keen on creating melodic structures first then adding technicality to it after. He's also really good at explaining musical concepts and guitar techniques, has a few workshops you can find on YouTube that are a great watch even if you don't play guitar

I've seen both Guthrie (in The Aristocrats) and Rage, had a better time seeing Guthrie. Rage was fun, sure, but from the perspective of being blown away by the musicianship and having a memorable experience, Guthrie was the clear winner.

RATM was back in the days before they became so overtly for the machine so it still had a bit of anarchic energy to it. Really sad (but was obviously going to happen) that they cucked out
