Slavery existed in Africa long before America. Legal precedent for slavery in America was a man named Anthony Johnson, a colonist in Virginia who was actually black and fought to keep his property. Obama's family could have easily sold off the African Americans to America -- hell he did it during his presidency when he bailed out the banks.

I dunno, but I think after 3+ generations of your family living in a country entitles you to say you're from that country, I.e. American, South African, Australian etc.(not canadian though, half-froggy bastards they are)
The concept of former slaves calling themselves African-American is kinda stupid and confusing, because 1-2nd generation Africans from Africa are lumped in with black people that are usually more than 1/3rd European and have a completely different cultural identity. People just wanted a more neutral way of saying black American.
Do white Americans call themselves European-Americans, or British-Americans? Nope. They call themselves American.
