CDMX is the only "safe" city in Mexico. Avoid the subways at peak hours if you want to keep your wallet. Otherwise not so bad.

If you go to any major tourist area you're safe. I'd go to mexico city, stay in the city center or a nice area (roma, polanco) for a few days, rent a car and go stay in tepoztlán for a day or two. Or if you want to do beaches go to cancun, rent a car and drive along the coast and stop at the other beach towns between cancun and tulum (you'll easily spot them on google maps or something). Stay only in tourist areas. Stay away from Tijuana as it's gotten way worse.
DO NOT venture anywhere out of your hotel/motel out late, you will be targeted. Monsanillo is a great harbor town that has friendly locals. Ensenada as well. Always stay in tourism areas, DO NOT GET DRUNK, do not venture too far or you'll be fucked.

Any tourist city is safe (Cabo, Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta) but YOU MUST STAY IN THE TOURIST ZONE. ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. Only a few meters outside the tourist zone doesn't get the same police pretence and yes, you could be killed. No joke it is very very dangerous for gringos. Stay at your resort area and you are good to go. I would recommend against Mexico City or Tijuana unless you want a high probability of getting mugged. If you do just give up your $$ without a fight because again they will really kill you.
