What can be done to fix it, and what life style choices can be taken to make people more self sufficient? I recently got to stay in a cottage in TN for almost two months thanks to a family member allowing me to use it . It had a woodstove, raised beds, lots of cast iron pots and furnishings/books. The way everything you did tied into one another or allowed you to create something else was pretty fucking cool. There is essentially no waste and everything was used for something. As an example.

You can do more of the same if you have livestock like chickens to throw scraps to, and use their egg shells/poop as fertilizer. I might ask them if I can just straight up buy it and live there because it was the most peaceful place I have ever been, and I needed little outside help for most things I needed.
How do we get people interested in this sort of stuff, especially zoom zooms? Boomers pretty much royally fucked over their offspring by not giving them any skills once so ever and letting the next two generations suffer, but I think with enough knowledge and grit it would be more than possible to carve out a commune or something that doesn't rely on outside help.

Let me clarify, when I say "rely on others" I mean consumerism and reliance on large corporations for their very basic needs. Soap, fertilizer, food, textiles. So on and so forth. All of these things could literally be made or grown by a single household or somewhere within the local community by someone who has expertise in that area. Is relying on others bad? No, but over-reliance on manufacturing that takes place across the world as compared to across town is. No one has any skills and instead just goes to the store to buy shit. Very few people know how to repair simple items like axe handles, coat hangers, or rusty tools. They just go to the store and buy another.
