No. In fact one of the VERY few things I agree with the left on is densifying urban cores of cities.
Pic rel is houston - it's improved since this picture, but look at how all of this EXTREMELY valuable urban land is sitting as unproductive, underdeveloped surface parking. Want to keep yuppies and gentrifiers out of your neighborhood? Build housing on these. Let the people who want to live downtown, live downtown. It'll help your neighborhood too.

Wrong - white people ruined it by leaving, and the government subsidized it. We could have pushed the poor to the suburbs but we did it instead to prop up the auto and construction industry in the 50s-80s.
A lot of cities are realizing their mistakes however, and gentrified white urban neighborhoods are pretty fantastic now. But god damnit we need a lot more of that to reverse the trend. And yet we continue to subsidize soulless suburban sprawl.

That's what we did here. Most social housing projects are in the suburbs or on the edge of the city, it's to the point where the word for suburb in French has become synonymous with the projects

Banlieues - well aware. Every day I wish we would have done that. The trend in the US is starting to reverse and with housing and gas prices reaching unsustainable levels, it's starting to show in increased urban housing prices as well. Formerly blighted neighborhoods especially in my hometown are seeing exponential growth in recent years.
