Zelenskyy vows to liberate Ukrainian cities from Russian occupation

Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has delivered his nightly address, updating his people on the situation.

He talked about needing more weapons from Western countries and added: "The price of this battle for us is very high - it's just scary".

He also vowed to liberate Ukrainian cities that are under Russian control.

He said: "We will come to all our cities, to all our villages, which do not yet have our flag on the administrative buildings.

"Although there are a lot of Ukrainian flags there, in people’s houses, I'm sure of it.

"And we have already seen them when people protested against the occupiers. And we will see them again - everywhere, when we return.

"We will come to Kherson. And ordinary Kherson residents will meet our army on the streets of the city.

"The failure of the occupiers, who tried to celebrate the so-called Russia Day, only proves that Kherson is a Ukrainian city. And Kherson residents will celebrate only Ukrainian holidays.

"We will come to Melitopol. And we will return to all Melitopol residents the opportunity to live without fear

" And, by the way, all the collaborators who are now threatening to take away land from farmers in Melitopol and other districts of Zaporizhzhia will most likely end up in this land themselves.

"We will come to Mariupol. And we will liberate the city for the third time. It was liberated from the Nazis in 1943 by a brilliant operation."

Ukraine to be granted official status as EU candidate country, report says

Politico has cited several unnamed officials as saying that the European Commission will recommend granting Ukraine official status as an EU candidate country.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Saturday that the EU executive's opinion on Ukraine's request to join will be ready by the end of this week.

Damage to bridges in eastern Ukraine

All bridges to the city of Severodonetsk are now impassable, making it impossible to get civilians out and humanitarian aid in.

Serhiy Haidai, governor of the Luhansk region, which includes Severodonetsk, said that Russians had destroyed two of the three bridges connecting the city with Lysychansk, and the third is old and unsafe.

Several damaged bridges in the region have now been pictured in satellite images taken by Maxar Technologies on 11 June.

Russia likely made 'small advances' in Kharkiv - MoD

The British defence ministry says Russia has likely made "small advances" in the northeastern city of Kharkiv "for the first time in several weeks".

However, the MoD adds that Russia's main effort remains the assault against Severodonetsk in the east of Ukraine.

It says: "On 10 June, the First Deputy Chairman of Russia's Military Industrial Commission predicted that state defence spending will increase by 600-700 billion roubles (GBP 8.5 -10 billion), which could approach a 20% increase in Russia's defence budget.

"Russian government funding is allowing the country's defence industrial base to be slowly mobilised to meet demands placed on it by the war in Ukraine."

Zelensky vows to retake Donbass and Crimea

The Ukrainian president was speaking after his military bombarded civilian areas in Donetsk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to “liberate” the Russian territory of Crimea and the independent republics of Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR). He was speaking just hours after reports of the Ukrainian military shelling residential buildings, a marketplace and a maternity hospital in the center of Donetsk.

“We will come to all our cities, to all our villages, which do not yet have our flag,” Zelensky boasted in a video address on Monday night, claiming that his army will defeat its Russian opponents in eastern Ukraine and recapture the cities of Mariupol, Kherson and Melitopol from Russian and DPR and LPR forces.

“And I ask everyone who has such an opportunity to communicate with people in the occupied south…say that there will be liberation,” he continued. “Say it to Gorlovka, Donetsk, Lugansk. Tell them that the Ukrainian army will definitely come.”

“Of course, we will liberate our Crimea as well. Let every Russian official who has seized precious land in Crimea remember: this is not the land where they will have peace,” he threatened.

Donetsk and Lugansk declared independence from Ukraine two days before the outbreak of conflict in February, and Crimea voted overwhelmingly to rejoin Russia in 2014.

Hours before Zelensky spoke, Ukrainian shells hit a maternity hospital, a marketplace and residential areas. Dozens of injuries have been reported and a mother and her 11-year-old son are among the dead, according to DPR officials.

Reports claim that as many as 300 rockets and artillery shells hit the city in a single two-hour period on Monday, and that NATO-supplied 155mm shells were used in the attack.
