It happens after mass-equalizing events, where the the ability to obtain wealth, power and opportunity is shuffled and the lines creating barriers to that kind of progression are blurred.
Historically this happens after war or a sudden collapse of the population. Basically the fabric of society needs to be dismantled a bit, and the readjustment period getting it back together sees opportunistic people in the right place at the right time making huge strides in life.
The US exited WW2 relatively unscathed compared to its counterparts, it was already much larger, and it was viewed favorably by most of the world either via admiration, intimidation, or a bit of both. Naturally, as men returned to work along with some new scientists with questionably German accents, the new products and eventually industries coming out of the US generated a massive amount of wealth as there were no other countries with comparable production or innovation. It helps that many of these industries were universally needed or useful - e.g. fertilizers for agriculture.
Others would also point to some of the economic policies at the time but in reality, these would have just enhanced or sustained this boom that nearly always occurs during the recovery stage of war or catastrophe.
